DescriptionThe figure of Christ at the center with his right hand raised and left hand grasping a tall staff with a a banner and cross at the top. His head with long curly hair, enframed by a rayed nimbus. Drapery encircles his waist and shoulders billowing out to behind his right arm. In the foreground there are two soldiers. The figure at the left sits on a raised grassy area, his feet below him on a level with the other soldier who sits on the ground nearest Christ with his right leg partially bent and crossing over his outstretched left leg. The left side soldier is holding his head in his hands, his elbows on his knees. The soldier at the right leans back on his left arm braced on the ground, while he turns his head up and over his right shoulder to look at Christ. His right hand grasps the grip of the sword at his waist. A halberd lays on the ground beside him. Behind and right of Christ is the upper body of a young male kneeling behind a stone slab. He gestures with both arms raised, his hands above his head and mouth wide open. Further back and to the left of Christ is a group of three women, standing in front of a large open wooden gate, two of them holding cylindrical vessels. Beyond them is a hilly landscape with buildings. The image has a heavy black border, which has an indent on the outer edge of the lower left side, possibly from poor inking of the woodblock.
The image relates to the morning after the resurrection of Christ, described in the New Testament books of Matthew, Mark and Luke and John.
"Mark Chapter 16:1-3
Christ's resurrection and ascension.
English (Douay-Rheims)
1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalen and Mary the mother of James and Salome brought sweet spices, that coming, they might anoint Jesus. 2 And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they come to the sepulchre, the sun being now risen. They set out before it was light, to go to the sepulchre; but the sun was risen when they arrived there. 3 And they said one to another: Who shall roll us back the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 4 And looking, they saw the stone rolled back. For it was very great. 5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed with a white robe: and they were astonished. 6 Who saith to them: Be not affrighted, you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen: he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. "

"Matthew Chapter 28:1-4
The resurrection of Christ. His commission to his disciples.
English (Douay-Rheims)
1 And in the end of the sabbath, when it began to dawn towards the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalen and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. 2 And behold there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and coming rolled back the stone and sat upon it. 3 And his countenance was as lightning and his raiment as snow. 4 And for fear of him, the guards were struck with terror and became as dead men."

The presence of Latin text on the reverse of the paper is visible in the larger white areas of the image side. The closenness of the printing to the edge of the paper indicates that the original page has been cut down. See the file for an example of a full page from a bound 2nd edition (1519) of the 'Speculum' sold at Christies in 2000.
The text is printed in two wide columns with the heading "Deƒcendit ad inferos." over the left hand column and "M iii" at the bottom of the right column.
Float mounted in a modern thin black frame with flat silvered inner facing. Plexi glazing.
