DescriptionA glass cylinder with two plant stems one with three out-curved petals like a tulip and another with multiple leaf shapes. The image area has two horizontal lines, or seams, where it looks like the plate was cut and then reassembled to possibly repeat motifs. The artist reuses elements of the image with the cylinder at the bottom center partially reappearing at the top center and the tulip petals reappearing at the bottom, to the left of the cylinder base.
The aquatint is very lush. The ground is a soft matte grey with areas of red tinting. A swathe of white tinted with green and yellow is interrupted and refracted by the glass cylinder as it slashes diagonally across the center width of the image; the jagged, etched ends giving it movement like a comet trail. The cylinder and inside edge of the tulip stem are accented with a deep blue.
The heavy cream-colored paper has a deckle edge at left and the others are slightly irregular and possibly torn along a rule.Exhibition HistoryLabel on outside cardboard packaging: Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum/ Rutgers State University of New Jersey, George and Hamilton Streets/ New Brunswick, NJ 08903 Rest of Label: Jane Murray/ 20 West 64th St/ New York, NY/ Mary Frank/Not tulip (in pencil)ProvenanceCollection of Jane S.
