DescriptionView of a corner of an orchard with a stone wall in the background, beyond which appear two towers in the town of Arles, one belonging to the Romanesque Church of St. Trophime and the other the Town Hall of Arles. It appears to be early spring. The tree in the foreground is bare of leaves although those in the background have indications of foliage or blossoms, also, there are what appear to be dandelions in the grass of the foreground.- Works on Paper
Several opinions of the date of the drawing are published, however, recent scholarship based on a reconsideration of Van Gogh's letters, leans strongly toward late March or early April, 1888. Van Gogh arrived in Arles on Feb. 19 and departed on May 8, 1888. (Dumas et al, Royal Academy, 2010)
According to De la Faille, the brown ink color seen at present was originally "lilac" (1928, reprinted 1992, no. 1516), also called "violet" in Heenk, 1995, p. 176, and Pickvance, 1984 as cited in Ives and Stein, MMA, 2005, p. 156 [catalog no. 44, the entry for the Hyde drawing]. Heenk's description adds "Like several other early drawings after nature. (The drawing) is made with a perspective frame. Aiding lines are still visible on the paper. The violet ink which so easily faded is applied with a quill and reed pen over a pencil armature. On top of it some black ink is visible." See Conservation for further discussion of ink color and Van Gogh's use of a chemically-derived colorant methyl violet in his drawings.
