DescriptionThe artist fallen asleep at his work bench with his head and arm resting on an open book. His engraving tools lay by him. An owl perches on the back of his chair. Eichenberg was well-known as a book illustrator. The figures behind him in his dream are authors, including Edgar Allen Poe and one of the Bronte sisters. Others may be Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Over the artist's shoulder is an ecclesiastical figure, probably Sir Thomas More, who is looking at his own image on an engraved plate.Exhibition History"Artist, Book, Image: The Prints of Fritz Eichenberg."
