Inscribed"A Paris chés la Ve [e is superscript with dot , the 'Ve' abbreviates
Veuve or widow] de F. Chereau, rue St. [t is superscript with dot below] Jacques,/ aux 2 Piliers d'Or" [at the two golden pillars/columns] engraved along the bottom of the image area of the plate. The widow of the engraver François Chereau (1680-1729), continued to sell prints at his shop on the Rue St. Jacques, apparently selling Boucher's work as well.

DescriptionLeft of center the main figure, a male in ragged clothing, unshaven, wearing a hat, carrying a pipe in his right hand, and what appears to be a cane or walking stick in his left hand. To his right a broom leans out of the image, the upper handle not visible. Behind and to his right another male figure is seated on an upturned staved tub. Behind this amother standing male with hat holding something in his hands before his chest, possibly something to eat?
