SignedThe initials "WH" appear on the side of the rearmost trunk strapped to the side of the stagecoach. "By Winslow Homer" printed below the image.
DescriptionThe cover image of Appleton's Journal of Literature, Science and Art for Saturday, July 24, 1869. The magazine masthead comprises the upper third of the printed page. Below is Homer's engraving showing three children, one girl and two boys, standing in the foreground. The boy at the right is in profile and the center boy and the girl at the left are placed in on a diagonal so that they are seen largely from the back and right side. The girl is holding up a sprig of flowers in her right hand and all are carrying small pails that may be lunch pails or possibly for picking berries. The children are looking towards the right midground at a stagecoach rushing by. The illusion of speed is created by a cloud of dust behind it and the lack of horses pulling the coach because they are already out of the image beyond the right margin. On the top of the coach one of the passengers, a woman, waves a handkerchief at the children.

Beneath the image the legend "ON THE ROAD TO LAKE GEORGE. By Winslow Homer"
