DescriptionAge undetermined, after 1777. There were many copies of this very popular sculpture created by Houdon ca. 1777. Louise Brongniart (1772 - 1845), the model, was the five year old daughter of the sculptor Alexandre Brongniart, who was later to head the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory from 1800-1847. [Like Houdon, Brongniart's work was widely known. Under his leadership Sevres transitioned from royal to state ownership and executed many large commissions. These included the creation of two massive services known as the Service Iconographique Grec (gods, godesses, philosophers) and the Service des Arts Industriels (a kind-of Diderot's Encylopedie executed on porcelain).- Sculpture

note: the above is not correct--the Alexandre Brongniart who headed Sevres Porcelain Factory lived from 1770-1847, he was Louise's brother; her father was Alexandre Theodore Brongniart (1739-1813) -Bryn Schockmel, 5/26/23ProvenanceCollection of Mrs. Louis F.
