InscribedOn the reverse of the print "2050" in pencil, lower right. Two pieces cut from old mat board and mounted inside new mat: 1. "Saints" [long space] Theodorus- Raphael Sadeler" cursive, black ink; 2. "Raphael Sadeler- /1558- 1616/original copper engr./16th cent./Saints [underlined]" in cursive pencil On a third piece of old cut out mat board "971" printed in black 3/4" high numbers in a late 19th or early 20th century type on a pre-printed and glued paper with punched edges(like a stamp). The same kind of number is found on 2008.20.8, .9 and .14. The board adjacent to the printed number also has "14.50" (the 50 in superscript) written in pencil on it.
DescriptionAt the center, a bearded, long-haired male carrying a long, thin cross, with a nimbus surrounding his head, wearing armor-like jointed plate metal gauntlets, manacles around his ankles and possibly a chainmail shirt under an outer loose, shift. He has bare feet, but two armor shoes or foot coverings (sabatons or sollerets) sit nearby on the ground. He gazes upward at a rayed source of light in the upper right of the image. Immediately behind him are stone stairs leading up to a metal grate like a prison cell. In the near background at the left is a figure in monk's robes seated in a cave with a scroll unrolling in front and above him. In the distant background to the right is a road with a cross at the side and a rising mountainous landscape with a circular temple-like structure having a single figure in the pedimented entry. The image area is borderd by a double line except for the single line along the bottom separating it from the legend.

The legend on the lower margin of the print has two lines of text, the bottom line indented under the top line on either side of a centered number "14":
"Sacra puellus adhuc THEODORUS templa Georgi
Martyris, et paullo graudior antra petit:
Ferrea cui vestis, manicæ, pedicæque, domus que,
Longaqué crux. Christi nomine, dulcis erat."
