Signed"MF" in block capitals, conjoined with the F leaning backwards on the slanted right leg of the M; engraved in the lower image, left of center, by the figure's right foot.
Inscribed"372" in red ink on the mounting paper, below the lower right of the print. "73.159" in very light, possibly erased pencil, LL. There are several indications that the paper on which the image is presently laid down was used for another print or this print was repositioned on it. A second similar red ink number "377" is visible beneath the LR of the engraving, along with a circular black ink collectors stamp that is partially visible as a half circle next to the lower right of the image. "B" in pencil is written on the mounting paper beneath the LL of the print, probably recording the Bartsch number. There are also remnants of what appears to be a glued paper mat window outlining the image in an earlier mount. "JPG 1796" in pencil on the back of the mounting paper. "Circle of/Marcantonio Raimondi/(ca. 1480-1527/34)/ St. Lazarus [underlined]" written in pencil on the bottom center of the interior mat. "Not the Lazarus who [cut off]/from the dead but [cut off]" printed in pencil in the extreme LR of inner mat.
MarkingsA partial collectors stamp on th LR front of the sheet, circular, in black ink, overlaps the image area slightly. Dealer states that the mark is that of Friedrich Augustus of Saxony (1797-1854). Another small circular black ink collector's stamp with a "T" located half underneath the print LR and half visible adjacent to the dog at the right. The mounting paper has a partial large fleur-de-lis watermark.
DescriptionA standing male figure with draped robes and a halo behind his head. His left foot is raised on a small block and he hold a "clacker" or noise-making device in his right hand while pulling back on one of its flaps with his left hand, possibly to frighten away the barking dog that he is turning to look at in the lower right. Another dog in the lower left is looking away from the figure.Exhibition History"Old Master Prints from the Sparling Family Collection", Hoopes Gallery, The Hyde Collection, February 28 - May 24, 2009.ProvenanceDresden, Germany, Friedrich August II, King of Saxony
