SignedLower left: "A.T. Bricher"
InscribedA handwritten label on hand-lined cream card stock is glued to the verso. In black ink it reads "'Scituate Rock'/On the Beach Scituate/lby/A.T. Bricker(sic)/ana (sic)/1880". Also stamped on the verso in the lower left: "COLONIAL SQUARE ART SHOP/STRATFORD, CT" with the date "March 31, 2003" stamped next to it. Below this, hanwritten in black ink: "Rag mat, mag back and uv glass added". The first handwritten label was probably on the old backing and was retained and reattached when it was rematted. However, the label does not have significant oxidation or soil to indicate that it was on the original backing. Perhaps it is an exhibition label dating to a later time.
DescriptionA large rock outcropping on a beach at low tide. Brown seaweed along the tideline. Sailboats on the horizon to the right. Close to shore in the middle of the right midground a figure rows a boat. Two empty row boats are anchored nearby along with a partially submerged lobster trap, closer to shore. In the left midground, behind the large rock are several other rowboats, and an upended lobster pot.Exhibition History"Recent Acquisitions", The Hyde Collection, Hoopes Gallery, May 28, - October 7, 2016ProvenanceMonroe, CT, Mary & Franklin Renz2015, Glens Falls, NY, The Hyde Collection Trust
