DescriptionA portion of a larger tapestry. At the bottom of the tapestry, the lovers Pyramus and Thisbe are being trampled by allegorical beings who draw a triumphal wagon (only the head of one goat pulling the wagon can be seen). The procession is led by Venus who carries a lyre, a symbol of lust. The two 'grotesque' figures of women with fish torsos and bird's feet are sirens. The couple at the top of the tapestry are in a betrothal pose, inscriptions identify them as La Lubricité and Le Dépit, lecherousness and spite.Exhibition History"Medieval Art in Upstate New York", Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY, April-May 1974.ProvenanceCollection of Baron D'Ezpeleta, Chateau de Septmonts, Aisne, France; P.W.
