SignedLower right, outside the plate, in pencil, cursive writing: "F. Duveneck". Inscribed in the plate at LL: initials "FD" adjacent to the title
InscribedLower left inscribed in the plate: "Grande Canal/ Venezia /FD".
MarkingsLR, next to artist's signature: stamp in red ink a stylized monogram of the name "Otto", apparently the collector's stamp of Otto Bacher, owner of this print when it was purchased at an Anderson Galleries auction in 1910 by Louis Hyde. See also EL2003.3.2 for Theodore Wendel etching of Venetian scene with same stamp. Bacher was a student of Frank Duveneck's and one of the so-called "Duveneck's Boys" as was Wendel. The "Otto" stamp is more literal, but in the same stylistic/calligraphic vein as the butterfly used by Whistler, who is credited as the leading figure of the etching revival. Bacher was also a colleague and collaborator of Whistler's in printmaking.
