DescriptionGoya commenting on the Inquisition. A figure wearing a very tall, conical, dunce cap is seated on a platform surrounded by a sea of faces at his feet. A man standing in a pulpit-like enclosure is opposite the seated figure and reads from an open book or document. The flames on the cap refer to the fate of those found guilty by the inquisition, which was burning at the stake.Exhibition History"Drawn from Life and Legend: European Works on Paper from the Permanent Collection," Hoopes Gallery, May 19- Sept. 23, 2007.“Prosperity and Exclusion,” The Hyde Collection, Hoopes and Whitney-Renz Galleries, May 31 – Sept. 21, 2025ProvenanceNew York, NY, Jane S.
