Sir Peter Lely, English, b. Germany, 1618-1680, was appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to the court of Charles II in 1661. This was the position that Van Dyck held before him and that Geoffrey Kneller would hold after him. He had a large personal art collection that was dispersed at his death
